Traffic coming into Suva City at 7am

Acting Minister for Infrastructure Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has hinted in Parliament today that major change may take place on how people will travel once they have four-lane roads.

He told the Parliamentarians that they are doing similar type of planning like cities overseas where people will get in the designated buses after parking their cars in the satellite car parking area.

Sayed-Khaiyum revealed this while responding to SODELPA MPJiosefa Dulakiverata who asked if government has any plans to extend Koronivia Road in Nausori and construct a coastal road towards Suva to ease traffic congestion between Suva and Nausori.

Sayed-Khaiyum says once the four lanes are done, they will need to improve the quality of buses to empower people to travel in buses as people do overseas.

Sayed-Khaiyum says the reality is that a lot of people in Fiji will never catch the bus but travel in a taxi or take their own car because they are lawyers, accountants or wear suits.

He says the same people will catch the bus, ferry or train in Sydney or Auckland.

Meanwhile, SODELPA MP Mere Samisoni asked Sayed-Khaiyum for solutions regarding the huge traffic jam experienced between Lami and Suva City.

Samisoni told Parliament that she lives in Lami and almost every day they encounter an accident which causes huge traffic jams and it takes them two hours to reach Suva.

Samisoni says this has been happening for a long time and asked if there can be a solution to clear traffic quickly.

In response, Sayed-Khaiyum stated that Lami is an enormous bottleneck from the cement factory to Suva.

He says this road needs four lanes and for this to happen, it will require them to change three bridges.
