The Lautoka Diabetes Eye Clinic received new eye equipment worth $430,000 by the Lions Clubs International Foundation.
Assistant Minister for Health Veena Bhatnagar says the new equipment will enhance services provided by the Clinic and the surrounding Outreach Eye Clinics from Rakiraki to Sigatoka.
Bhatnagar highlights the Lautoka Diabetes Eye Clinic was funded by the Lions Clubs International Foundation in 2000 under its worldwide Sight First Programme with further funding in 2003 to expand the services to other towns around Western Region of Fiji.
She adds this was first diabetes eye care programme in the Pacific Islands.
Bhatnagar says the Lions Club is funding the equipment and some training while the Ministry of Health and Medical Services is responsible for providing the trained doctors and nurses and maintaining the equipment.
