The Leader of the Unity Fiji Party, Savenaca Narube is urging those who know the 2018 general election date to let everyone know as it is a critical issue for all political parties.
Although all the constitutions in Fiji have always had the same process where the Prime Minister advises the President to issue the Writ of Elections, Narube is saying that the people should be told now.
Narube made this comment during the announcement of the party’s first batch of provisional candidates for the 2018 general elections today.
Narube says the timing of the release of their manifesto will depend on the election date.
According to the 2013 Constitution, the President may, acting on the advice of the Prime Minister, dissolve Parliament by proclamation, but only after a lapse of 3 years and 6 months from the date of its first meeting after a general election of the members of Parliament.
The Writ for Election of members of Parliament shall be issued by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister.
According to the constitution, the writ for a general election must be issued within 7 days from the expiry of Parliament or from the proclamation of its dissolution by the President.
Meanwhile, the Unity Fiji Party’s first batch of provisional candidates for the 2018 general elections include Savenaca Narube, Liga Gukisuva, Tomasi Vakatora, Ratu Mosese Turagaduadua, Satish Kumar, Jope Kavoa, Manasa Konataci, Mereia Rasiga, Aliki Turagakula, Isoa Tubuna, Ratu Jope Naucabalavu, Ashwen Blake and Ratu Asaeli Naevo.
