An increase in employment opportunities for medical officers is expected to be seen once the extension of the Lautoka Hospital Accident and Emergency Department and Operating Theater are completed.
Lautoka Hospital Acting Medical Superintendent Dr. Luisa Ratou said with the completion of the extension to the A&E Department the hospital will more nurses and doctors at the hospital.
Ratou said at the moment the A&E Department has thirteen medical officers but they are looking at increasing this to another five.
Ratou said there is a greater need for this increase because the new complex will also see an increase to the number of beds at the A&E Department.
She said they will increase the number of beds to twelve from the four that are currently available at the department.
The cost of the new Lautoka Hospital complex is $12.4 million.
