The Ministry of Education has for the first time piloted the Literacy & Numeracy Program for Lower Primary students in 85 schools in Fiji.
While speaking at the launch of the program Education Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy says that literacy and numeracy are the cornerstones to educational development globally and he is optimistic that the program will boost our concerted efforts to improve education in Fiji.
Reddy also stressed that the understanding of language, moral values, family values and virtues builds up the foundation for future learning.
He adds that this learning is then further strengthened in Early Childhood Education where the child is introduced to more literacy and numeracy contents.
Reddy says that the program is from years 1 to 4 in Primary School, where the real foundation on the basics of literacy and numeracy is laid.
He says that the Education Ministry has evaluated that lot of essence is given to the final years of schooling for children.
However, Reddy highlighted that the core of the matter is that if the basics of literacy and numeracy need to be filtered to the child properly.
The Education Minister says that they are injecting more strategies to bolster this initiative; the vision to solidify the basics of literacy and numeracy of our children.
He also acknowledged the Australian Government and the Access to Quality Education Program for developing and piloting this package in 85 primary schools across Fiji and assisting in the training of all class 1 and 2 teachers in the country.
Reddy adds that he is confident we are going to positively boost education in literacy and numeracy development through this program in all schools throughout Fiji.
