Leader of Government in Parliament Inia Seruiratu says the late Speaker Dr.Jiko Luveni was a true patriot adding that even when the stakes were high, she did not hesitate to come forward and serve, as she served as the Minister for Women, Poverty Alleviation and Social Welfare in the interim government.
While speaking on the motion that the parliament expresses its deep sadness at the death of Dr.Luveni and express its deep condolences, he says she revolutionsed that ministry during her tenure as she put in a number of ground‑breaking programs and also did a lot for gender equality.
He says after the passing of the late Speaker Dr. Luveni, many Fijians realized that quite apart from being the first female speaker, she was the pioneering female in many areas in her professional and public life.
Seruiratu says if he wrote a story about Dr. Luveni’s life and accomplishments it will be entitled Breaking Glass Ceilings; the life of Dr. Jiko Fatafehi Luveni.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Sitiveni Rabuka while supporting the motion, offered their condolences and congratulated the people of Ono for producing such a loyal, hardworking, dedicated and devoted servant.
He thanked the government for putting funds aside for the state funeral for Dr. Luveni.
Rabuka says that she deserved no less.
