A big landslide has taken place next to the Gram Sangathan School at Buiduna, Nausori and school management is urging relevant authorities to take quick action.
School’s Manager, Ravindra Prasad says the landslide has taken place just next to a classroom block which has four classrooms.
He says they had written to the Fiji Roads Authority and the Ministry of Education last year about putting a retaining wall as landslides at this site has been taking place from early last year.
He says heavy rain last night has washed away a large portion of soil next to the school.
Prasad says parents have told them that they will take their children away if nothing is done regarding the landslide as they are fearing for the lives of their children.
Prasad says the school is still open and the teachers and management are monitoring the situation.
When approached, Fiji Roads Authority CEO, Jonathan Moore says they will look into the matter and see if this comes under their responsibility.
Education Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Iowane Tiko says they had told the school management not to further develop classroom blocks as a geo technical survey had found out that the site is vulnerable to landslides
However, Tiko says they will be contacting the school management soon to find a solution.
