The Minister for Youth and Sports has expressed his concern about i-Taukei youth not inheriting traditional knowledge.
Speaking at a consultation with youth from Rotuma, Lomaiviti and Lau, Laisenia Tuitubou says it is sad to note that youth do not even know simple things such as the names of their tokatoka (family unit), mataqali (clan), and yavusa (tribe).
Tuitubou says his concern is that these youth are in the village surrounded by their elders and should have a strong attachment to their history, the land and their traditions.
He adds it is also important for i-Taukei youth to know how to perform traditional customs and practice and know i-Taukei protocols.
He says parents should teach their children about traditional knowledge.
