The Land Transport Authority receives as many as seven impersonation complaints per week from the public through its Contact Centre and offices around the country.
This has been confirmed by LTA’s Acting CEO Aptinko Vaurasi who says that last year LTA referred more than 30 such cases to the Police.
Vaurasi says that LTA is also aware of cases where impersonators have been charged and released on bail but are still defrauding the public.
He says that this is quite alarming because LTA has been actively creating public awareness about the importance of following the proper legal procedures in order to apply for LTA services.
However Vaurasi says that people are still attracted to fraudsters because they want things such as driver’s license or Public Service Vehicle permits easily without meeting the mandatory legal requirements.
Vaurasi has also highlighted that LTA will not accept, process or attend to any request for a PSV permit application as all PSV permits excluding Rental and Hire are on freeze since 2011.
He says that in 2016, LTA wrote to the Police Commissioner, Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho to treat impersonation cases with urgency and take such action against the perpetrators that serve as a deterrent.
LTA encourages members of the public who come across impersonators to report them immediately to FICAC or the Police.
