Labour Minister Jioji Konrote has confirmed that out of the two thousand two hundred and one cases of claims for compensation for death and injuries pending between the period of 2001 and 2014, 96 percent have been settled.
He says following the cabinet decision in 2011, the government included all the Republic of Fiji Military Forces servicemen and women to be covered under the Workmen’s Compensation Act, subsequently adding another 285 cases to those pending prior to 2011.
He says prior to this they were not covered under the Workmen’s Compensation Act. As a result there was no compensation paid out to those who were killed or wounded on duty.
Konrote adds works on the 33 cases are underway which is yet to be settled.
