The Leader of Opposition Ro Teimumu Kepa is calling on the protection of endangered fish species like kawakawa and donu that are currently in their breeding season.
In a statement released by her office, Ro Teimumu says that whilst it is the role of the Ministry of Fisheries in educating the public on this crucial breeding, she also calls on traditional leaders in various communities to assist in monitoring fishing grounds.
Ro Teimumu also reminds general seafood consumers to especially note that both species are endangered.
However she is grateful to all citizens who have continued to preserve this period annually until the month of September where the breeding season ends.
