A 45-year-old woman of Kulukulu, Sigatoka has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of her 14-year-old daughter.
Sundar Kaur pleaded guilty to one count of murder.
The court was told that Kaur subjected her daughter, Sanjani Lata to prolonged brutality and suffering by tying her leg and hands to restrict movements and repeatedly struck her with an aluminium pipe.
This took place on 1st November last year.
The beating inflicted by Kaur on her daughter caused her death.
Kaur later set fire to her daughter’s body and placed the remains in the septic tank behind their home.
High Court Judge, Justice Aruna Aluthge told Kaur that she breached the trust as a mother and betrayed the motherhood.
Kaur has to serve a minimum term of 14 years before a pardon may be considered.
Meanwhile, Kaur’s sister-in-law, Geeta Devi who was charged with giving false information to a Public Servant has been sentenced to 16 months imprisonment with a non-parole period of 10 months.
