Pacific Island Nations should not have to compete amongst themselves when it comes to tourism.

This was highlighted by the Attorney General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum while speaking at a Panel Discussion on Tourism for Sustainable Development at the 52nd ADB Annual Meeting being held in Denarau, Nadi.

Sayed‑Khaiyum says it is extremely important that the region works together to promote tourism adding that different countries have different points of interest that can complement each other.

He also highlighted that the Pacific is a very small region that needs to be able to market itself with two or three countries.

Sayed-Kahiyum says also highlighted that tourism benefits people not only in terms of employment but it plays an active role also in promoting our culture.

Other panelists part of the Discussion on Tourism for sustainable development were representatives from Indonesia, Japan, Italy, and the ADB President, Takehiko Nakao.

The discussions also noted how Asia and the Pacific’s policymakers face the challenge of guiding the expansion of tourism in a way that protects the environment, particularly ocean health and improving the quality of life of local residents.

The panel reflected on their experiences to highlight policy options to ensure a sustainable future for Asia and the Pacific’s tourism.
