The international team of congenital heart specialists who arrived in the country late last week hope to carry out three open heart surgeries per day this week.
The team, led by leading Paediatric Heart Surgeon, Doctor Ashish Katewa is in Fiji as part of the Gift of Life initiative organised by the Sai Prema Foundation.
Doctor Katewa has confirmed that nine children already had open heart surgeries from last week and are all recovering well at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
Katewa adds the team will be visiting the country every year.
The team last visited the country in 2017 where 25 children were provided with free heart surgeries.
General Practitioner and the Medical Coordinator for Sai Prema Foundation Dr. Krupali Tappoo is urging parents to bring their children in urgent need of high-risk cardiac surgeries as the treatment is completely free of charge.
The surgical team will be in the country until the 21st of this month.
