Inmates part of Operation Musudovu will be paid according to the tonnes of sugar cane harvested.
This has been confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of the Correction Services, Jo Kulinidilo who says the payment for the expenses of facilitating harvesting will be the first to get deducted before payment is given to the inmates.
Kulinidilo says the balance will then be divided into a 60:40 ratio where the inmates receive 60% as payment for their labour.
He says 40% will be returned to Government.
Kulinidilo stresses Operation ‘Musudovu’ is not about money as it is about civic duty, community engagement and being able to give back to the community.
He adds the involvement of inmates in this sort of initiatives is an opportunity for them to experience money-making avenues which could be emulated on release.
Kulinidilo says this initiative will enable inmates to start off on their own when they are discharged as they can provide for themselves and their families through small businesses such as having their own farms.
