Information Bill referred to Parliamentary Standing Committee

Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum

The much awaited Information Bill has been referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee.

The constitution provides for the right of every person to access information held by the government and to correct or delete false or misleading information that affects a person.

While presenting the bill, Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the Information Bill is a fulfillment of the requirement to enact a legislation giving effect to section 25 and 150 of the constitution.

Sayed-Khaiyum says the bill will create a completely heightened level of accountability for public officials who make decisions about individual citizens in the country.

He says the 1997 constitution also had a provision to have this legislation but no information bill was brought in.

Sayed-Khaiyum further says that many decisions were made in the past with no level of accountability.

Opposition MP, Niko Nawaikula says they are happy that the bill will be referred to the committee.

He says further comments will be made to the committee.

We will have more on the bill later.
