Individuals can now take any work related grievance to the Ministry of Employment themselves, unlike the old legislation that required grievances be taken to the ministry by a union.
Minister for Employment Jone Usamate highlighted this in parliament today.
Usamate says a grievance is when an individual feels he has had unfair treatment about something and these grievances can be taken to the ministry where it will be addressed by their mediation unit.
He says grievances at work are issues which have anything to do with dismissal and if they feel that they have been discriminated against in the workplace on any grounds.
Usamate says sexual harassment issues can also be reported
NFP parliamentarian Prem Singh asked Usamate what is the success rate of mediation over reconciliation.
Usamate says he does not have the success percentage of the reconciliation system the ministry used to have but their mediation process success rate is above 80% in terms of the ability to get the parties to resolve the issue.
