The Indian High Commissioner to Fiji Vishvas Sapkal has presented a cheque worth $76,700 to the University of the South Pacific to further facilitate the study of the Hindi language in Fiji.
He made the presentation while hosting the musical drama Ram Leela based on the Hindu religious text Ramayana, which was watched by a full house audience of about 400 people at the FMF Gymnasium.
Sapkal says Ramayana has a very important place in the lives of many Fijians. He says the Ramayana was brought by the Girmitiyas and it was their source of inspiration.
The renowned group, which is performing in Fiji for the first time, is from Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra - a musical institute in India.
Sapkal also launched 4 stamps to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary.
Sapkal says his three year term in Fiji has come to an end and says he received a lot of support from the people of Fiji because of which he has been able to do his job better.
Making his last public appearance the out going high commissioner paid his condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the shoot out in Christchurch.
The groups next performance is in Labasa at Bulileka Shree Sanatan Dharam Ramleela Mandir tomorrow at 7pm.
They will be performing in Ba at 7pm at A.D Patel College on Sunday.
The groups last performance will start at 6.30pm at Girmit Centre in Lautoka next Tuesday.
