Fiji Pensioners Association has requested the government to seriously look at increasing the pension rate for the spouses of pensioners who are former civil servants.
President, Hari Raj Naicker says on the death of the civil pensioner, the spouse gets 60 percent of the amount which he claims is a saving of 40 percent for the government.
He says some families are being affected with the current rate.
During the annual general meeting of the Fiji Pensioners Association today, Naicker also requested the government to provide them with a piece of land in Suva where they want to construct a center for senior citizens.
Attorney General and Finance Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum who was the chief guest at the event today stated that they will look into these requests.
Sayed-Khaiyum also reminded the members of the Fiji Pensioners Association that they now have rights under the constitution that can be enforced through courts.
He says the new Fijian constitution is very much focused on the enforcement of rights of people in terms of excess to socio-economic rights.
