The Immigration Department is working towards purchasing a piece of land to build Fiji’s first ever detention centre in Nadi.
Assistant Director Edward Brown said they have earmarked a piece of land in Nadi and are currently finalising details including the lease agreement.
He said the initial plan was to have it together at the airport but they feel that security should not be compromised which caused the delay.
He said those entering Fiji illegally or violating immigration laws are usually detained at hotels while being processed.
Brown added that the high costs of this process should be mitigated through the establishment of a permanent detention centre.
The cost of the construction of the detention centre is $450,000.
