Education Minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy has urged parents to take an active role and identify their children’s interest, rather than pushing the children to their interest.
Speaking at the Careers and Cultural Resources material launch at Saint Joseph’s Secondary School, Reddy says with this initiative they are trying to help students to make a career choice well before they reach year 13 and not make a last minute choice.
He says they do not want to push a child to an area which does not meet the child’s interest and probably meets the parents’ interest and as a result the child does not do well in university.
He adds when you ask the child, they say they were not interested and their parents pushed them to it.
Reddy says this result is wastage of children’s and parent’s time, as well as governments resources.
