“I wish I was there to save my daughter.”
Those were the words of 35-year-old Vasemaca Nakasamai who lost her 12-year-old daughter during Tropical Cyclone Winston.
Nakasamai could not hold back her tears today while sharing the story of her daughter’s last moment at their village in Rukuruku, Ovalau.
Nakasamai was in Suva with her younger daughter while her eldest daughter Milika Dauvunau was with her parents at Rukuruku village.
She says that her daughter was preparing with her grandmother to move to another place when a huge pine tree fell on their roof and went straight into their living room. The tree severed her mother’s leg.
Nakasamai says her mother survived the incident but her daughter was unlucky.
She adds that no one in her family was strong enough to inform her about the tragic news.
Nakasamai’s husband was serving in the Middle East when their daughter passed away.
Meanwhile the Sadole family also attended the national service.
50-year-old Katarina Sadole had just arrived in Fiji from Australia last year when her 28 year old daughter was killed in Tavea village in Ovalau.
Sadole last spoke to her daughter Seruwaia Rokosere on the Friday before Cyclone Winston hit Ovalau.
