Hundreds of family members of servicemen and ex-servicemen that were part of peacekeeping missions gathered at Albert Park today to celebrate the Fiji-UN peacekeeping 40th anniversary.
Speaking at the celebrations, President Jioji Konrote says our peace keepers have been our most valuable emissaries, and they have contributed a lot to international peace keeping and national building.
Konrote added that 56 peacekeepers lost their lives in the honor of peacekeeping and had shown the world Fiji’s commitment to supporting the cause of international peace and security.
The President added that peacekeepers must maintain the proud legacy they represent, when they are deployed in the name of the nation.
Member of the 1st Battalion, Jonacani Bolavutia stated that they had faced a lot of difficulties in Beirut, Lebanon.
Bolavutia says he has noted that conditions have gotten better over the years.
Also present at the celebrations today was former President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and members of Parliament.
