The Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has nothing to hide, as it is an independent commission and wants to be very transparent.
This was highlighted by the Director of the Commission Ashwin Raj while making the Commission’s submission to the Public Accounts Committee on the 2014 Auditor General’s Report.
Raj says they take the concern very seriously that their accountant failed to act from 2008 in finishing the commission’s financial reports from that time.
He says there is no justification for the delay of the commission’s reports to made available as the accountant at that time could have done the reports.
Raj says he is concerned because some of these reports were made available on the Facebook page of political parties that have already started running a commentary that the Director of the Humans Rights Commission should not be talking about racism and should be more focused on strengthening governance.
Raj who became the commission director last year says since 2008 the commission failed to comply with the financial manual.
He says the commission will appoint a qualified internal auditor on a project term basis who will undertake the responsibility of declaring the financials and submissions to the Office of the Auditor General.
He says the appointment will be made by June 2017.
Raj says they have made various appointments for the betterment of the commission.
