The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission is calling for an independent investigation into claims made by a couple that they were stripped naked by officers at the Labasa market area.
Commission Director Ashwin Raj believes it is very problematic that the Labasa police station is going to investigate an issue that pertains to the conduct of two officers in Labasa.
Raj says the complaint must be independently investigated by the Police Ethics Unit.
The Police Internal Affairs Unit is continuing investigations into a complaint filed by a woman that she and her husband were allegedly stripped naked by officers at the Labasa Market area.
They claim that they were stripped in an area where members of the public could see them.
The couple who are market vendors are claiming that they were strip searched at the market master’s office and the market police post as police believed that they were carrying drugs.
