The President of the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association, Dixon Seeto stresses that hotels are doing a great deal of work for the community as opposed to views that hotels are not doing enough.
Seeto who was a panelist at a symposium on Tourism and Community Development in Fiji at the University of the South Pacific today says a number of hotels are directly contributing to community development.
He says one of their main projects now will be providing clean water for many of the remote villages.
Meanwhile, a PhD candidate of Massey University in New Zealand, Emma Hughes who did a research on tourism and community development in Fiji for four months says that local communities often have limited control over initiatives.
However, Hughes who visited 12 villages in Sigatoka and Nadi and spoke to a number of stakeholders in the tourism sector says hotels are doing some amazing work in terms of corporate social responsibility in assisting schools and hospitals.
The symposium was organized by the USP in association with Massey University of New Zealand.
