The British High Commissioner to Fiji Melanie Hopkins has commended the Government of Fiji for taking steps towards the ratification of the Convention Against Torture and Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
While delivering the after‑dinner remarks at the Attorney General’s conference, the High Commissioner hopes there will be other countries doing the same in due course with the UK considering adding support to Small Island Developing States to help on trade, standards, and rights.
She says that she is really privileged to address the conference because in many ways Fiji and the United Kingdom's link through legal and justice system are the pinnacles of that shared history.
Hopkins adds that from an economic perspective, the key to attracting international investment is confidence in the rule of law.
The UK will host the Commonwealth Summit in April next year and Hopkins hopes that many participants in the AG’s Conference will recognize that their training and roles have been shaped by the history of strong Commonwealth links between sovereign countries
