Residents of the Home of Compassion were today treated to some good company and refreshments as the Citizens Constitutional Forum celebrated International Peace Day with them.
The 18 residents of Home of Compassion were attended to by the staff of Citizens Constitutional Forum as they spent some time talking and feeding them.
Citizens Constitutional Forum CEO Sara Mataitawakilai says this year the CCF team chose the Home of Compassion because they wanted to include the residents in the celebrations.
Mataitawakilai says it is our right to live in a peaceful society and a peaceful world.
He says today is also the 70th year of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which is the most important of all rights.
The CEO says Fiji has to be made a peaceful nation to all Fijians.
Meanwhile, resident Connie Garforth celebrates her 92nd birthday today.
Home of Compassion Nurse Manager Emi Frances says the Home’s residents are mostly women and the eldest resident will turn 98 soon. The Home employs about 20 staff.
Frances says some residents have been at the Home for more than 50 years.
She says the Home was established in 1954 and has looked after hundreds of people.
Frances says she will not encourage people to be brought to the Home as at that age they should be with their families and in familiar surroundings.
She says many residents end up at the Home because they don’t have family to look after them.
She says when residents pass on, they make sure they are not alone in their last moments.
