High-speed internet services will soon be available on Vanua Levu when the eCentre cable landing station in Savusavu is up and running.
The cable will connect to the Tui‑Samoa undersea cable, providing a high‑capacity and high‑availability fibre optic link between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has told parliament there will be at least a 100% increase in internet speed for users in Vanua Levu when the cable is up and running.
He says now there are also opportunities for people to set up their ICT businesses in Vanua Levu.
Sayed-Khaiyum says they plan to have modular building for the eCentre cable landing station in Fiji at the end of April and then have the cable up and running.
Opposition MP, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu asked if there has been any consideration on the plight of the Qoliqoli owners.
Sayed-Khaiyum said any necessary payments to anybody and any environmental impact assessment has been carried out.
He says the cable does not affect their ability to fish or travel in the water.
