There is still a high prevalence rate of lymphatic filariasis in the Eastern division, Taveuni and Malolo.
Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services Philip Davies says they are aiming to eliminate lymphatic filariasis by 2020.
He made these comments at the launch of the Mass Drug Administration for Lymphatic Filariasis.
He says in 2007 an assessment found the prevalence rate of the disease had reduced from around one in six to one in ten.
Davis says lymphatic filariasis continues to impose a significant health burden among the population and can cause long term disabilities.
