The Ministry of Health and Medical Services received Microscopes and Mosquito Surveillance Equipment from the US Navy today.
While receiving the equipment, Health Minister Jone Usamate says their capacity to combat diseases such as Zika, Chikungunya and Dengue Fever has been enhanced.
Usamate says they have recorded 48 cases of Chikungunya and 37 cases of Zika so far.
He says the microscopes and surveillance equipment will be used to monitor the density and distribution of vectors in the divisions and also facilitate the implementation of control interventions against vector borne diseases.
Usamate says collaboration with the U.S government is vital for Pacific Island countries like Fiji because we lack resources and local expertise for Medical Entomology.
