The Ministry of Health has revealed that they have recorded a total of eight deaths from leptospirosis all from the Central Division.
According to the Ministry since declaring an outbreak of leptospirosis for the Central on 29th January this year, the first 5 deaths occurred between the months of January to April of this year with the recent 3 deaths occurring shortly following the bad weather that was experienced over Easter.
The Health Ministry now continues to monitor communicable diseases such as leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue fever and influenza in the country.
In light of the adverse weather conditions in recent weeks, the Ministry of Health has placed emphasis on the surveillance of communicable disease, early detection, management and public health response measures.
Some of the symptoms of these communicable diseases include high fever, headaches, muscle aches, red eyes, abdominal pain, vomiting and chills.
The Health Ministry is urging people to seek medical attention early to minimize the risks of developing complications as usually patients present late to health facilities with advanced stages of these diseases.
It says that the combined effort of the health authorities and the general public in advocating safe health practices and maintaining clean environments is expected to minimize the risks of the sources of such diseases and assist them in their efforts to reduce the spread of communicable diseases.
