Gun owners have been handing in their semi‑automatic firearms to be destroyed, following last Friday's terror attack.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern last night encouraged owners who were contemplating surrendering their guns to do so.
Following a Cabinet meeting Ardern said details of the government's proposed law changes on gun ownership would be announced by next week.
She said although in principle decisions had been made on the reform of New Zealand's gun laws however there were still some detail to be worked through.
Meanwhile, a gun club in Kaitaia has burnt down overnight and Fire and Emergency are treating the blaze as suspicious. It is not known if this is related to the attacks.
Also churches across New Zealand are opening their doors to allow Muslims a safe place to pray following last Friday's terrorist attacks.
Police have urged people to stay away from mosques until the risk level drops.
