A group of Itaukei professionals have called for the reform of Fiji’s land laws in a special presentation to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources today.
The group made up of two lawyers, two land valuers, an environmental scientist and two University lecturers, highlighted the need for Fiji’s land laws to complement landowners and their economic requirements.
Lead presenter and Principal land consultant, Peremo Caginivula says the committee should be given the right to clarify all types of land issues with people.
He says often there is a mis‑conception amongst people about ownership.
Caginivula says in the case when a development is done, land laws in the country should allow native landowners to be covered economically and culturally.
He says government should further help native landowners in this area.
