A 75-year-old grandfather of Suva who pleaded guilty for raping his 6-year-old granddaughter seven years ago has been sentenced to 11 years imprisonment.
The offence happened between 2008 and 2011 when the victim was living under the care of the elderly man.
Suva High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo said the aggravating factor is that the victim’s parents were separated and she was raised by her grandparents.
While sentencing the man, Judge Temo said the 75-year-old man must not complain when his liberty is lost to pay for his crimes.
He said the man has breached the trust she had in him as a child as he turned her life into a living hell.
The grandfather will be eligible for parole after 9 years behind bars.
