Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said the Fijian Government is working closely with the United Nations for the release of the 43 Fijian peacekeepers who have been detained by an armed group in Syria.
Bainimarama said the latest information received is that they are safe and negotiations for their release have already begun.
He assures the families of the soldiers that the government is doing everything possible to secure their safe return.
Bainimarama said these men are peacekeepers, not combatants in the Syrian conflict, and there is no need for them to be detained.
The Prime Minister said the soldiers and their families are in the thoughts and prayers of all Fijians.
Bainimarama said we are united as a nation in praying for their safe return.
