The government is now reviewing the national building code.
Minister for National Disaster Management, Inia Seruiratu has told parliament that the Trade Standards Advisory Committee and the Fiji Institute of Engineers are working together to review the Home Builders Manual that was introduced in 1990.
Seruiratu says they want a building code that will be applicable to all Fijians, compulsory and affordable.
He says the building code was mostly implemented in municipal areas in the 1990s because there was a question of affordability.
Seruiratu says the key message from Cyclone Winston is that everyone should be ready to invest in their homes.
