The Water Authority of Fiji has identified a water source that can supply water to an estimated population of 5,630 residents living in and around the Wainadoi and Nabukavesi areas.
This was highlighted by Minister for Infrastructure, Parveen Bala after he was asked by Ratu Suliano Matanitobua to inform Parliament if they are going to commission the Regional Water Scheme in these areas.
Bala says the identified source has a minimum dry weather yield of 10 million litres per day, while the projected demand for the existing population is only 1.5 million litres a day.
He says this is sufficient to cater for the existing demand.
He also says that talks are underway with the respective Mataqalis in terms of the location of the source and after the agreement between the parties he will come back with the estimate cost and the project will commence.
National Federation Party member, Parmod Chand then asked him to explain if the Ministry is having discussions with the Agriculture Ministry to provide clean water to Wanadoi’s agricultural initiatives since it is a climate resilient agriculture area.
In response, Bala says that this is part of their program.
He was then asked by Government MP, Alvick Maharaj about how the Ministry is working to improve clean water supply in other remote areas.
The Minister stressed that the government does not concentrate on any particular area.
Opposition MP Suliano Matanitobua then asked hhim to reveal those Mataqalis names who are involved in the discussions.
Bala told the Parliament that he cannot disclose their names.
