The Great Council of Chiefs is not coming back because it was not looking after the interests of all the people of the country.
Those are the words of FijiFirst Leader, Voreqe Bainimarama after questions were raised by Rewa chief, Ro Filipe Tuisawau in Nakorovou on why the GCC has been dis-established.
Bainimarama stressed that the GCC was one of the most undemocratic institutions Fiji ever had and only looked after the itaukei.
The FijiFirst Leader said the GCC backed the 1987 and 2000 coups and it was also heavily politicised.
He also stressed that the role of the chiefs remain and people should not be misled by anyone that the chiefly structure has been taken away.
The Social Democratic Liberal Party, the Fiji Labour Party and the People’s Democratic Party have already confirmed that they will reinstate the Great Council of Chiefs if they form the next government.
