Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama with Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa outside Parliament.

Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama says the Great Council of Chiefs was one of the most undemocratic entities in the country and the opposition which keeps harping about democracy wants to bring back the GCC.

Speaking to Fijivillage, Bainimarama says talking about bringing back the GCC is a waste of time and the GCC only came to the fore in 1987 when Sitiveni Rabuka used it to gain popularity.

Bainimarama says the GCC did not help Fijians in 2000 and it is most irrelevant now.

He says we have not had the GCC for the last 10 years, and the chiefs are still with us, and will be here till kingdom come.

Bainimarama says people should not mix up the importance we place on the responsibilities of the chiefs and the GCC.

He stresses that the GCC was irrelevant and very political.
