Teachers who are members of the Fiji Teachers Union were told today to remain steadfast as people will come and go but the union will stay.
Speaking at the opening of the 89th Fiji Teachers Union Annual Conference at Rishikul Sanatan College in Valelevu, FTU National President Muniappa Goundar said the presence of the members showed their strength and courage towards fear and oppression.
Goundar said these were challenging times because he claims it is being made difficult by the Education Ministry.
Goundar said the Fiji Teachers Union is not against reforms but there should be full consultation with Teachers Unions before the reforms are made.
He also says they want an Education Commission to be formed.
Education Minister Rosy Akbar has already made it clear that she will have dialogue with teachers unions to discuss their issues.
Also present at the opening of the Fiji Teachers Union Annual Conference were NFP Leader Professor Biman Prasad, New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji Jonathan Curr, NFP’s Krishna Dutt and unionists Felix Anthony and Attar Singh.
Close to 1,000 people were present at the FTU Conference opening. They have 5,000 members.
