A former school teacher has been sentenced to 2 years 4 months imprisonment by the Labasa Magistrates Court for indecently assaulting a student.
He was convicted for a count of indecent assault and one count of indecently insulting or annoying any person after a trial by Magistrate Cama Tuberi.
The Court’s finding was that in October 2013, the 40-year-old man touched the victim’s hip in the classroom.
In 2014, he also pinched the victim near the side of her breast.
In his sentencing, the Magistrate considered that the man breached the trust between a student and a teacher and had no respect for the victim.
The mitigating factors which the Magistrate considered was that the teacher was a first offender and promised not to reoffend.
He has been given a non parole period of 18 months.
