A 53-year-old former Special Police Constable has been sentenced to three years imprisonment after being convicted of indecent assault by the Levuka Magistrates Court.
Vilinisi Luvu knocked on the door of the 23-year-old woman’s home to ask for a glass of water on 12th March last year.
The court heard that the victim only opened the door because Luvu was in his police uniform.
Luvu further entered the house and after drinking water, followed the victim to the kitchen where he grabbed the victim and touched her private part however the victim managed to escape after some struggle.
Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne stated that Luvu betrayed the trust of the public as well as the police department.
He says this sentence is a warning to sexual predators who may be in law enforcement authorities and would use their power to exploit vulnerable women in the society.
Luvu received a non-parole period of two years.
