Former civil servant charged with Extortion out on bail

A former civil servant charged with Extortion by Public Officer has been released on $5,000 bail with strict conditions.

FICAC laid charges against Shiri Narayan who appeared in the Nadi Magistrates Court yesterday.

It is alleged that Narayan on the 22nd September 2006, whilst being employed in the Public Service as Divisional Surveyor Western of the Lands Department in Nadi, accepted a payment of $10,000, beyond his proper pay and emoluments for the performance of his duties as a Divisional Surveyor Western for approving a transfer and change of a lease.

Narayan has been released on strict bail conditions to report to the Ba Police Station every Saturday between 8:30am to 1:30pm and surrender his passport to the Court.

The matter has been adjourned to 20th April where Narayan is expected to take a plea.
