Department of Fisheries aims to produce 100 metric tonnes of dry seaweed before the end of this year.
The Director of Fisheries Department, Aisake Batibasaga says so far the department has produced around 42 metric tonnes of dry seaweed which is mostly from Vuaki and Yaeta farms in Yasawa.
Batibasaga says a National Seaweed Task force has been set up to oversee the plan to move seaweed farming in Fiji to industry level in three to five year's time.
He says production has been hampered a lot this year as most planting materials were lost due to storm and surge waves.
Batibasaga says in order to produce large volumes of seaweed they first need to put in place all components of seaweed farming program.
The Department of Fisheries was allocated $200,000 to run the seaweed project this year by the Ministry of Finance.
