First sitting of new parliament after general elections to take place today

The first sitting of the new parliament after the general elections will take place today.

The swearing in of the members of parliament will be done in this parliament sitting together with the selection of the Speaker of Parliament, the Deputy Speaker and the Leader of Opposition.

A secret ballot will be done where the MPs will select who they want to be the Speaker.

The Secretary General will also preside over the swearing in of MPs and the appointment of the Speaker.

Once the Speaker is appointed, then the Speaker will preside over the selection of the Deputy Speaker and the Leader of Opposition.

The first sitting of parliament will start at 9.30 this morning.

The official opening of parliament will be at 3 this afternoon.

The Fiji First Party has 27 seats in parliament, SODELPA has 21 seats while NFP has three seats.
