Three fires in the past few days have caused severe damage to FEA power poles carrying the 33,000volts transmission lines.
The Fiji Electricity Authority says power supply was lost to customers around Momi and Uciwai, Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki and parts of Nadi as a result of these fires.
FEA’s Acting CEO Bobby Naimawi is calling on their customers who live along the sugar cane belt areas or along the sugar cane farm residences to take precautionary measures when lighting up fires.
FEA says the uncontrolled cane fires are the prime cause of damage to the wooden power poles and apart from being dangerous and life threatening, such fires cause unwanted power interruptions.
FEA is requesting its customers not to burn cane or rubbish near the FEA power poles and is also dangerous to throw lit cigarettes around exposed areas where power poles are located.
They say that if anyone caught causing damage to the power poles as a result of a fire will be charged according to the law.
