The Land Transport Authority has issued 13 traffic infringement notices to passengers travelling in buses without valid E-ticketing receipts and failure to pay fares.
This has been confirmed by LTA Chairman Vijay Maharaj.
Maharaj says the $50 fines were issued through random spot checks carried out by the LTA Enforcement Team.
He says all the offences were in the Central Eastern region ranging from Suva to Nausori where the passengers were travelling in buses with fully operational E‑ticketing machines but without E‑ticketing receipts.
Maharaj says fines were issued for failure to pay Stage 1 to Stage 3 fares.
He says these fines were issued after a period of 3 months from the gazette of the Legal Notice, so the full three months was given before the fines were handed out.
He says after the implementation date, the Authority conducted awareness through enforcement officers present at bus stands and bus stops to ensure the transition from the cash to cash less system.
Maharaj says there will be an increase in enforcement in Suva and other divisions to ensure that passengers travelling in buses with fully operational e‑ticketing machines are paying their fares using their e‑ticketing cards.
