Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources Malakai Finau will meet the Shree Sanatan Dharm Purohit Brahman Sabha of Fiji this morning to discuss the time frame for the use of fire crackers on Diwali this year.
The Sabha has called on the authorities to reconsider the time frame for the use of fire crackers as Diwali will be celebrated on Sunday 30th October while the public holiday for Diwali is on Monday 31st October.
Finau highlighted yesterday that as per the law, the fire crackers can be used for 7 hours that is from 5pm to 12 midnight on the Diwali public holiday.
He says on other days, people are allowed to use firecrackers from 5pm to 10pm.
Finau says the use of fire crackers outside the time period will be a breach of law and the law enforcement will deal with it if there are any complaints by the public on unbearable noise level.
He stressed that fire crackers which are still on the ban list are dragons eggs, woodpeckers, strikers, pulling/string crackers, aerial wheels, bag mines, cylinder mines, moon travellers and rockets without sticks.
