A Ministry of Finance employee appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court charged with two counts of abuse of office, one count of falsification of documents and one count of obtaining financial advantage.
It is alleged that Iliesa Waqavonovono between 1st January and 31st August this year, while being employed as a clerical officer retained two BSP cheques in his personal possession which had a total value of $67,998.
These cheques were being refunded to the Ministry of Finance.
It is also alleged that Iliesa Waqavonovono between 1st March and 31st August this year, dishonestly falsified three cheques totaling to $57,409 with the intention of obtaining a gain from the Ministry of Finance.
Waqavonovono also allegedly obtained a financial advantage amounting to the total sum of $57,409 from the Ministry of Finance between 1st March and 31st August this year by falsifying three government BSP cheques.
Waqavonovono has been released on $1,000 cash bond.
The matter has been adjourned to the 4th of January next year.
